September, 2000 Fan of the Month: Mike Rosenbaum Congratulations, you've won a signed Southside Johnny poster! Sorry, no photos of the incident, but here's my story: I'm guessing the date was July 5, 1980, or thereabouts. I had just returned to the States (D.C.) and I was delighted to hear that South would be doing a huge show at the Freehold Raceway. I believe the bill was Willie Nile, Hall and Oates and Southside. I decided to pack the car and drive up from D.C., thinking somehow that I still had cash in my moneybelt from my Europe trip. This may have been true, except that I forgot to wear it! By the time I arrived in Freehold, I had used all the cash in my pockets for those damn tolls and soon realized that I was completely broke. (i.e: not enough money to get through the tolls and back to D.C.!!) Nevertheless, I figured it should be no problem to track down some distant acquaintance in the small crowd of about 50,000! Having accomplished the feat and now possessing about $20, I settled in for what turned out to be one of the greatest Southside shows ever, complete with Max and Garry onstage for "Stagger Lee"! As I recall, people were beginning to think that the entire E Street Band would take the stage, one by one! The show finally over, I returned to my car to find that I had cleverly left my headlights on (it had been foggy on the way up!). To quote Gene Levy in Slash, "What a day I'm having!" Well it turns out that I'm now the only person left in the parking lot, except for Southside himself! What a thrill to get a jump from the main man! That's my best Southside story. It was a great day and I got a kind hand from Southside Johnny. - Mike Rosenbaum
