August 2003 Fan of the Month: John Varine
I first heard about "The Jukes" in an album review by Steve Simels of
Stereo Review Magazine and based on his comments, ran out and bought "I
Don't Want To Go Home". It was great and made me a life-long fan. Then
I saw "The Jukes" in person at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena (probably about in
1972-73) as the opening act for Boz Scaggs. At that time they were
performing in pastel suits and hats!! Again, they were great! I've seen them every
time they have been near Pittsburgh since then. Our kids (19 and 21) now always
go with us also. We'll all be at Rosebud on May 24 enjoying another Jukes show!!
Last year we saw them at Rosebud and at the Rib-Fest in the Heinz Field
parking lot.
I am a recently retired high school chemistry teacher and frequently
played Jukes music while my students worked in lab, along with Bruce
Springsteen, Gary U.S. Bonds, Bob Dylan and others. It turned on many of my students to Jukes music over the years.
I especially love all the albums/CDs that were produced and have songs
written by Steven Van Zandt. He's an absolutely great songwriter and the
music is perfect for the Jukes style!!
