2003 Fan of the Month: Martha Gergasko I first started listening to Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes 2
years ago, my sophomore year of high school. I had been really in to Bruce
Springsteen my Freshman year, and that summer my pappy pulled out his old albums
and put on "I Don't Wanna Go Home" and I was hooked. There's just
something about boys who play harmonica that set my blood a flame.
On May 30th, 2003 I saw Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes for the
first time at the Morristown Community theatre. I can remember sitting in the
audience for probably the first 45 minutes thinking to myself, "Oh my
god...It's Southside Johnny....". I was in complete and total shock. I'm such a
huge fan...It was very surreal. And when he blew some harp, I thought I was going to
pass out! That first show left a taste in my mouth and a craving in my soul.
I wanted more. So when I found out about a month later he'd be playing at
the Stone Pony on July 5th, I immediately bought tickets. It was
part of the Pony's summer concert series so the stage was outside and Gary US Bonds was
there too. That was awesome, but there were two things I vividly remember about
that day, I was about 8 feet away from the stage, and it was hot....really,
really hot. You know, the kind of hot that makes your face melt off? But I didn't
care...It didn't really matter, cause as soon as Southside and the
Jukes hit that stage, I forgot about it, I forgot about everything and was completely
engrossed by the music. And I think that's why his music means so much to me, because
no matter what kind of mood you're in, there's a song that goes with it.
It helps make life bearable enough to keep on livin'. (And who doesn't love a
horn section? Come on.)
