September 2003 Fan of the Month: Dick Bruso
I've been listening to Southside since the late 70's and have seen him
and the Jukes 30-35 times and always when they are at Hampton Beach. My
first time seeing them was when I was living in San Diego back in 1983. Little
Steven had just come out with "Men Without Women". Southside was playing on a
Saturday night at a very small bar that probably held 100-125 people. A friend and myself were sitting at the bar when two "Disciples of Soul" members came in
and sat next to us. I told them how much I enjoyed their album with Little Steven and we shot the shit for awhile and talked about music and whatever else
came to mind. They said they had driven down from LA to catch the show. I know
these guys are all friends from one time or another and it was great to see
their support. Well, Southside came on, and I swear I never saw anyone give
more of an effort and performance then he did that night. He sang and the band
played like they were in front of 30,000 people. As I sat and listened it reminded
me of why some people just go thru the motions while other people live the
motions. Southside and the Jukes understand the difference - they got it right!!!!!
Thanks,
Dickie B.
