Fan of the Month: Terence Reilly Favorite
Southside story? That's like asking for my favorite Southside
song. Impossible!
Maybe it's the time he shared a beer with me and my friends
(don't know if he imbibed) along side his tour bus in
Poughkeepsie. Could be the time I bumped into him at Crazy Eddie
in Paramus when I was in the store looking for Slow Dance. Or
maybe it's the time I saw him waiting for a friend at Newark
Airport as I was listening to the "All I Want Is Everything"
disc. Upon seeing the disc, he sarcastically asked, "What are
you doing listening to that?"
All fleeting encounters with a man whose music I have loved
since the early 80s when I fell in love with Trash It Up! (Yes,
I said Trash It Up). Although it didn't take me long to realize
this collection of songs was not quintessential Southside, I
still thought it was great upon being introduced to it from my
friend Kevin.
I quickly snatched up all of the Southside music I could find
and have not missed a release (official or otherwise) since
first being introduced to this incredible talent.
Years ago, the friend who had introduced me to the wonders of
Southside decided to get married. As a wedding gift, I strayed
from the traditional appliances and sought a more special gift.
So, I wrote Johnny asking him if he would send his wishes to
Kevin and his new bride.
Keep in mind that this request was sent months prior to the
nuptials. On the day before the ceremony, I received a package
in the mail. Everyone loves a mystery package but when the
return address featured the name Lyon, I rushed to open the
surprise.
Inside was a note from Southside wishing Kevin and his bride all
the best. Needless to say, Kevin was speechless when he opened
the present at the rehearsal dinner.
Thanks Southside. That was 10 years ago and the story never gets
old. Your note is framed in their house to this day.
