June 2006 Fan of the Month: Mike
Wooten
I found out about Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes back in
the late 1970s when I was sophomore in high school. I had
recently become a fan of Bruce Springsteen's when the Columbia
Record Club sent me a copy of "Darkness on the Edge of Town"
that I didn't order. Neither I nor any of my friends had heard
of Bruce, but I figured what the heck, opened the album, and
became an instant fan. Shortly after that, I was talking about
the album and a guy in school said he liked Bruce, but there was
a really cool R and B band from the same town that I should
check out. He loaded me the Jukes' first two Epic albums and I
was blown away - to this day the Jukes remain my favorite group.
I actually got a speeding ticket because of the Jukes. They were
going to be on a show on PBS (maybe Austin City Limits, I can't
remember) one evening. I got off work at my after-school job
around the same time the show was scheduled to start, so I
begged my boss to let me off early. He wouldn't budge, so I
clocked out and jumped in my 1974 LTD and sped right down main
street like a maniac. That is until the local cops pulled me
over. Unfortunately, they weren't Jukes fans. Anyway, after
getting my citation for speeding and reckless driving, I cruised
on home and watched the Jukes. It was worth it.
