July 2007 Fan of the Month: Allan Wright

Submitted by Jackie Sheehan:

To whom it may concern,

I humbly submit a very worthy candidate for consideration for induction into the Fan Of The Month rolls. Allan Wright is a long time fan of the Jukes. He placed the Jukes onto the Internet by hosting the very first web page dedicated to the band. For many years
his site contained the only information available online. He graciously added the official link when the band finally opened their own web page/site. His site still exists to this day, making it the longest full time web site dedicated to the Jukes! Check it out at http://pease1.sr.unh.edu/southside/

I asked Allan to give me some words for this bio. The following is his story in his own words:

I got introduced to the Jukes by my uncle, who was a big Jukes fan, about 25 years ago back when Southside used to do two shows a year at The Hampton Beach Casino. I think he gave me Havin' A Party on an LP to listen to before inviting me to a show at the Casino.
My first Jukes show the Stompers were opening up for Southside, and since 'East Side Girls' was just hitting the local video TV channel (this was just before MTV). I thought I'd go to the show, and even if the Jukes live show didn't live up to the album, I'd enjoy the Stompers. Well suffice to say I've been a Jukes fan ever since.

During the early days of the Internet, I got hooked up with Debbie May's Southside Johnny e-mail list and was able to keep in touch with other fans and get Jukes information. In those early days even companies like Coke and Pepsi were still figuring out if the Internet would catch on. This was between the 'Restless Heart' and 'Slow Dance' albums. Being an employee of UNH, and having access to free web hosting for personal use as part of my employment benefits, I decided to put up a Jukes fan site, http://pease1.sr.unh.edu/southside/.

Well things caught on, and before long I was getting set lists posted from shows, and maintained a Juke's tour schedule. At one point I was even getting e-mail updates from Bill Durborow for the website. This went on for a few years and everyone was happy. Although my graphic arts skills aren't anything to write home about, people could get good, up-to-date Jukes info on the page.

During the US portion of the Acoustic tour, the European arm of which spawned 'Spittin Fire', I got the rare chance to go back stage and meet Southside, Bobby and Kevin Gordon after a show. I was thrilled when Johnny told me he never knew where he was playing
until he checked the website! I got a rare look into what a band puts up with on the road. That night the club's green room was a door out the back of the club that opened into a parking lot. The green room was the band's van!

The last notable Jukes story I have was helping out at Jukestock running the registration table Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Saturday morning Hood came to the table asking if anyone knew how to make a Bloody Mary. Well my wife Lori volunteered and using
Hood's magic drink suitcase, mixed up Bobby's 'hair of the dog' hangover relief. Attending Jukestock, and the 3+ hour megga set by the Jukes was definitely a highlight for me.

Since Johnny has obtained some professional assistance for his web presence, my modest site has remained fairly static, but I keep it up as a fan site, and as a remembrance of those times when it was the official Jukes home page. It's always great knowing you were part of the 'Street Team' before there was one.

Raise a glass....
Al
