October 2008 Fan of the Month: Frank Muylle
In my car there are always CD's of Southside Johnny, now of course the latest Grapefruit Moon. Fresh and delicious... In '76, I was in London with some friends looking out for punk music/concerts. We saw the Jam at the Nashville just when they were releasing their first single "This is the Modern World". At that time Graham Parker & the Rumour just released their first albums. And then we saw an ad for Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes at the Rainbow Theatre, featuring special guest Graham Parker. Rumours were that Bruce S. would be there too. So we bought tickets and that is where the story starts: Southside blew us all away... That evening bonus were indeed: GP, Ronnie Spector, Little Steven... this was definitely one of the best live performances I ever saw. (keeping the entrance ticket as a valuable great souvenir) I always tell friends that Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes concerts easily take 2 hours. And that is how it goes normally...But I remember Southside's probably shortest performance ever, late 90's on a R&B festival in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) It was a kind of an acoustic thing , Southside was due on stage around 1:00 PM, due to some delay, he got on stage a bit later, and after 4 or 5 songs he was kindly suggested to leave the stage for the next band (headliner of the festival was Ten Years After...:-) Kind of embarrassing moment for Southside and the fans...We could see the surprise in Southside's eyes too: is this it? :-) What is missing in my Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes collection: Keep making that great music with your great voice, great sound. Make people happy! | |
