August 2010 Fan of the Month: Sean and Dianne Guess
One of my mom's favorite stories was Southside screaming out at Two Guys "Hey Sean, Where's your mom?" when we were waiting to get “The Jukes” signed by him and the band and I had wandered off with my cousins to get a glimpse of the man. In 2004, during a video I was shooting for Brookdale Community Television, Mom said to Southside, "Our little boy is all grown up!" and Southside smiled at mom approvingly and finished shooting a small promo commercial for the station. Sadly in 2009, my mother was diagnosed with uterine cancer and while we had hope, we knew her chances were very low that she would get better. On her way to chemotherapy and radiation, she had me play Southside Johnny to make her smile and think about "Better Days." Even after she went into hospice, I would bring in Jukes music and hook up my MP3 to a small speaker, so she could hear “Jukesville” or “Hearts of Stone” or “Better Days,” or one of my special Jukes greatest hits mixes. She just would bop her head and tap her foot. She was happy. My mom passed away in February, and my heart was broken. I suffer bipolar depression, so my road back was a long one. But the way I was able to regain some of "The life" back in me was by playing Southside Johnny and walking around Asbury visiting the old haunts and marveling at how the city is on the upswing. Also I connected with many Juke fans online on Facebook. One special night was when Mr. Popeye and his son Kenny joined me at Silver Ball pinball museum and spent a special night with me, after not seeing him in 34 years. I was so psyched I started penning a new script called "Asbury Park, USA" about a new generation of artists on the Jersey shore. I know somehow this was my mother's way from heaven of connecting me back to Asbury and Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes. My birthday is June 24, 1971 and her birthday is August 22 and I was wondering if you could give her fan of the month to honor one of the original die hard Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes fans. | |
