September 2011 Fan of the Month: Rene Sollod
Some 20 years ago when I was in graduate school a guy from one of my classes walked me to my car one night after class and asked me out on a date to go see The Nutcracker with third row center seats that he'd gotten from a friend at the Meyerhof in Baltimore. Well I just thought that was the best first date ever and on the night of the ballet he picked me up, we were all dressed up and ready to go out and have a very "cultured" evening. When we got to the theater there was no-one around outside, no traffic, no-one in the lobby... I thought that was very strange but he assured me that we were there on the right evening. As soon as we got up to the doors to enter the theater floor the doors opened up and everyone streamed out - it was intermission! Needless-to-say the guy was embarrassed but we stayed for the second half anyway. By the end of the night I decided that I wasn't that hip on the guy but when he asked me out again I decided to go and take him to see "my kind of music" to see if he'd be into it or freaked out. So I took him to Hammerjacks in Baltimore. Hammerjacks always had the reputation for being a big biker bar, but always brought in good acts in the music hall. So I took him to see Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. My roommate showed up and we danced all night up in the balcony and had a fabulous time. After that I think my graduate school chum thought I was too wild for him and never asked me out again... to my relief. But seeing Southside Johnny at such a great venue was incredible and very memorable. I have tickets to see them Thursday 6/16 at Wolf Trap in Virginia as a pre-birthday celebration with all of my girl friends. It won't be the same as Hammerjacks... but it will still be fun to see Southside and the band at an outside venue.
