Was at the beach in Long Branch at 7 President's Park. Had the best of all worlds with the Jukes on the Fan, working on the Irish tan and Windmill Dogs directly across the road. Had my Cooler Radio blasting the Jukes. Sound quality varied from song to song and who's mike was carrying the solo. Looking forward to seeing everyone at Bar A especially "the Swede".

I'll , of course , be watching the crowd very closely for a glimpse of the " usual suspect's ." And wishing my life away , to get to Martell's on Tuesday . Enjoy everyone ! Southiside Johnny and the Jukes are the ONLY reason my friends and I go to Francesca's show...for the ENTERTAINMENT! SSJ is not only loved "down the shore", many fans come from all around the state to see the show.
I would also say that Southside is well liked in the caller's home town since the SSJ's show does very well at the Wellmont (located in Montclair). I hope that I will get the chance to say all of this to Mr. Mike on Friday, but for now I will show my support by calling the station.

Well our trip to New Jersey has been dramatic to say the least.
We woke up in the middle of the night saturday by police officers yelling and screaming in the hotel and then they burst in and pointing their guns at us and said "get those fucking hands up and put your fucking clothes on and get out of this hotel"
I have never got that fast out of the bed in my life.
Everyone at the hotel got the same treament.
Then we were told to go to a hotel across the street and they told us that there had been a fatal shooting on the first floor.
So it was pretty scary.
But otherwise the trip is great.
Friday it`s The Jukes at Bar-A and then it is Martells Monday and Tuesday.
So hope to see many of you there :)

Watching Mike Francesca of WFAN on the YES network yesterday. Now that is the radio show South and the boys will be playing this Friday from Bar A. Caller from Montclair told Mike he loves the show at Bar A and goes each year to see Mike's show live. He love everything BUT Southside Johnny is terrible in this mans humble opinion. Wants to know what Mike is thinking having such bad entertainment. Now Mike takes a very wishy washy attitude defending South. Mike however does give credit to Southside for bringing the large crowds that come to the event each year telling the caller South is loved down the shore. Unfrotunately I am unable to attend this year as I will be in Sunny Daytona Beach Florida but I think many from this blog should call Mikes show to show support for South and get his ear at the show Friday. Why would one want to live in Montclair anyhoo.

Southside has been unusually chatty in recent QotW's. Not this week. ROTFL.
Phyllis - a tip from a professional question-asker - never give the option of a yes/no answer. Try "Southside, ((optional: Sir, Fearless Leader, oh exalted one, yo dude(small d to to distinguish from the Dude)) please share your stories or memories of these gigs." He can still say no but he won't be able to say he answered your question!

I've been dormant through the summer as usual. It's only 2 months now till the UK gigs and I'm looking forward to hearing some of the new material live. Does anyone have any ideas about the guitarist(s) for the UK gigs? It looks like Bobby has a window in the Bon Jovi tour schedule and it would be great to see him back in the band again.
It also sounds like the new material needs 2 guitars live, so do we get a 10-piece line-up for the UK dates? Looking forward to Shepherds Bush.

Benny - I so agree Hampton almost seemed liked the home a bit north from home for the Jukes. It was almost Asbury Park before the bomb hit - Pleasant Beach on a smaller /different scale. Honky Tonk - Yes - jesssss we don't even go to the beach there anymore - arcade games and shops- and Ohhhhh the crowd there was always a tough one but a Jukes one.... Will that happen in Lowell - NO friggin way - I'm affraid those days are over unless they go back to the Casino - But how many more years is that gonna happen anyways - business is business and fun is fun - I sure hope Lowell will be both !!!!! time will tell!

I too will miss the yearly trek up to Hampton for the Casino show. Always a good time staggering back to motel after the show singing "Talk to Me" or "On the Beach" with fellow Jukes fans. That said, Lowell (minus the beach) will be fine & it's good seeing other venues added. It was great catching the Jukes in Worcester last year after they hadn't played there in years.

I agree the Casino Ballroom is a special place/venue and a summer without a Jukes show there with all the electricity/honky tonk/sights Hampton Beach has to offer is a summer that is just a little bit less memorable...I feel the Jukes always ramped it up in Hampton Beach....the crowd there is always highly energized and the Jukes just crank it up that much more...HOWEVER...I too will be in Lowell.......ONE MORE NIGHT TO ROCK.....

When I moved here, in order to see what available venues are near by, I checked the schedule archives and saw that Hampton Beach was listed for every year shown. As it's 13 miles door to door, I was really hoping it would continue. But I did notice that during the 2-weeks listed as not having any shows (between Lowell and BBKing's), that HP also has many openings, including the entire first weekend. Coincidence...? LOL

Hampton is a great venue for the Jukes but over the years there have been issues there as in any venue and it is all business after all - lets remember it the Jukes that make the shows great and I totally intend to enjoy the boys in Lowell - hope to see you all there!

The good folks at the Casino Ballroom in Hampton Beach sent me an email a while back explaining that they had, in fact, made an offer to the Jukes. Unfortunately, the Jukes had already accepted the Lowell show and that venue's contract contains a "large radius" clause the doesn't allow the Jukes to play in Hampton for a while. My guess is that SSJ will make a bit more $ in Lowell (I understand that they are actually ADVERTISING the show). While I think the Casino Ballroom is a special venue, I will be in Lowell for what is hopefully a night to remember. I need to hear "You Can't Bury Me" with the volume set at 11. Thanks.

Speaking of Steve Forbert.. I noticed recently that his long lost 5th album that was delivered to but never released by Columbia is now available for sale on his website, somehow he coaxed them into giving/selling him back the rights. Me wonders if the Columbia/Epic weasels would consider releasing those long lost early Hearts of Stone tracks back to John? Someone in Jukesland get working on this pronto!!!!

Last night at the Wonder Bar in AP was the Celebration of Susan Lisle. There were many Juke fans in attendance and the place was filled to capacity inside and out, Over 600 people attended, Music was continuous and two Jukes performed; Bobby Bandiera and Joe Bellia, who shared the drums with Vini Lopez. There were many NJ musicians too numerous to list. Even one of SS's teachers from middle school was there since John Lisle was also a student of his.
On behalf of the Friends of Susan Lisle Committee we thank the Jukes organization for providing an autographed drumhead from Dec 31, 09 NYE which was the highest dollar amount item of the auctioned items. The fact that Susan was there as always on New Year's Eve added to the appeal.
Steve Forbert stopped by to sing several songs. It was only a little over a month ago he opened for SSJ down the block at the Pony.
The event was a huge success --a fitting tribute to a world class Jukes fan. As one person standing next to us said " This is how I'd like to go out"

Great review of Pills and Ammo. I especially liked this -"Arguably Southside Johnny has taken the blues, added a bit of Jersey sand & salt (grit), and created a largely undefined but brilliant genre." When people ask me what kind of music the Jukes play, I have a heck of a time describing it, since it really doesn't fall into any particular category, in my opinion. When the reviewer describes it as "undefined," I think he's absolutely right. We gots ourselves something quite unique.

So, as a "long time listener" to a LOT of late night radio, I figured Himself to have been a fan of Art Bell, who used to play The Flirtations "Nothin' But A Heartache" almost every night in the wee hours, back before the band covered it (and nailed it down solid.) Now with the MKULTRA reference, I'd bet it's no coincidence. Or is it just another strange strange feeling....

WENDSDAY at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park there will be a benefit to celebrate the life of Susan Lisle. The event will run from 5 to 9 and thereafter. Susan was a decades long fan of Southside Johnny . She loved the music scene. The purpose of the benefit is to raise funds to defray some of the medical bills incurred by the family. There will be several bands and Bobby Bandiera among many others will be performing. There is a $10 donation for admittance. Hope to see many of you there. Susan was a very special person.

The Peter Frampton free show at the Pony. Billy Walton will be the opening act and will be appearing after Frampton finishes.
One has to have a ticket to get in even though it is free. From what we understand the Stone Pony will fill until capacity ticket or not by a certain time.
There may be some no shows (ticket holders) because of the following.
Last night we received an email from Holme Band at approx 1AM stating
Bobby Bandieria will be appearing with them tonight at D'Jais in Belmar. Showtime is about 7:30.

Hi Nelly,------If you and your husband have the energy after the Bar A event; there is a car show like no other in the tri- state area. It starts about 4PM on Friday just after Bar A and is only down the road about a half hour in Jackson NJ just off on 195. Every last Friday of the month the Fossils car club have a show that draws hundreds of cars from all over it ends around 9PM . However about 6PM is the peak amount of cars.. It isn't a judged show and has something for everybody times ten. It is limited to American made vehicles pre 1975. However some newer models are there.
Have your husband check out the site especially the pictures along with the video. It is close and an unforgettable experience.

Looking forward to seeing you both on the 27th

Hey Nellie- Check these out and you may have an answer as to what you seek. Unfortunately the Convention Hall had its annual huge classic car show last month.
These may be of interest:
August 20, 2010 (Raindate: Friday, August 27). 5:30pm-8:30pm Movie begins at dusk
PNC Bank Parking Lot 127 East 2nd Street-Plainfield, NJ
This event is a novelty in our central jersey area. From 5pm til dusk, we present a "classic car show" for vehicles with a production date of 1985 or older only. The show is highlighted by live musical performances, and a DJ spinning sounds of motown. Once judging is completed and trophies are awarded, the "30 foot movie screen" is lit for our "feature presentation" of the night. Just bring the family and a lawn chair....We will take care of the rest. A great night to cruise with a few friends! 908-377-6815, 908-249-7052 or visit www.jaybeeent.com
August 22rd
the South Jersey Cruisers Association Car Club will be hosting their “Hot Summer Nights Car Cruise”
Bennigan’s restaurant on West Landis Avenue in Vineland . The cruise is open to all years of American (marque) made cars that are muscle cars, street rods, cruisers, classics and rat rods.
The cruise is from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and special discounts on food will be given to the cruisers. The event has no rain date and is part of the SJ Cruisers “Hot Summer Nights” Music will be provided by DJ Steve Mauro. The event has no fees and spectators are welcomed. Information for the two cruises may be obtained by calling John at 856-825-3047 and SJ Cruisers’ website at thesouthjerseycruisers.com

Heard it was a cool night so the boys had to be recharged with a nice NE breeze in their faces.
Nice to play outdoors and not be sweating all over the place.

Just got back from Maine. The show was incredible! It was great to get to hear some of the new stuff as well as the classics. Turnout was good; almost all of the seats were filled and there were a bunch of people standing outside the seating area watching as well. The crowd was quite enthusiastic (go Maine!) and when they finally realized the show really was over, they totally swamped the merch table. I'm sure Pills & Ammo will be blaring out of car windows throughout Rockland for a long time to come!
Line up was:
Southside
Jeff Kazee
John Conte
Tom Seguso
Glenn Alexander
Joey Stann
Ed Manion
Don Harris (filling in on trumpet while Chris is on vacation)
[Nobody on trombone. Maybe Neal was off eating lobster?...not sure; it wasn't really mentioned.]
Set List:
This Time Its For Real
You Can't Bury Me
Passion Street
I Played the Fool
Woke Up This Morning
Walk Away Renee
Coming Back
Gin Soaked Boy
Talk to Me
Cross That Line
Loving Cup (Jeff solo)
Harder Than It Looks
Love On The Wrong Side Of Town
Iko Iko / Shake 'Em Down
Hearts of Stone
The Fever
Moondance (SSJ sang first half; Jeff finished)
I Don't Want To Go Home
Encore:
Havin' A Party
It's All Right

Good QOTW
Welcome to that dilemma of being a Jukes fan and liking so many songs and them having so many great songs to play. There are times where we all are always leaving wondering why "our" song was not played-even when it seems thay play them all at times. Thats how these great these guys are! Always putting on a tremendous show and leaving their fans wanting "that song".
You just have to start going to some Jukes shows and you will eventually hear your favorite or favorites but regardless never leave unsatisfied.
Its really tough on them when they have those "limited" sets with others.
If they had top billing with George you may have heard it and if they had stayed it would have been a helluva song between the 2 bands thats for sure.

I think they have a couple of options. I've seen Labamba's Big Band on the inside stage, and everyone fit. Kind of. And they can still probably use the outside stage in September.

Thank you all you wonderful Juke fans, Southside Johnny, all the Asbury Jukes and Carol for allowing me and my mom to FOTM (Fan Of The Month) for August. As a life long Juke fan I consider it a great honor. Been a fan since I was 5 or 6, so the band is my Elvis, Beatles and Sinatra all rolled into one. One last thing we use to always chant at concerts "JUKES! JUKES! JUKES!" Bless you all and Be Well. :D

Congrats Sean on FOTM and what a wonderful story you told. Its always great to hear how everyone gets their intros from their parents-that being the case as I too have handed down the love of Jukes to my youngest.
Yours really goes back to the classic time when the Jukes were a true force in the media.
