King album one day...read more

Jukes at Montreal Jazzfest
MONTREAL - When Southside Johnny got on the road to promote a trio of classic soulful rhythm ’n’ blues albums with the Asbury Jukes in the second half of the 1970s, he was riding in the shadow of his friend and fellow New Jersey son Bruce Springsteen’s mega-breakout. And he had only one goal. Read more.

Message from Johnny
Hey, gang. Thought I'd say something here for all to see. It's been a bad couple of weeks. Kevin, Steve Popovich and now unbelievably, Clarence. I'm still finding it hard to get out of bed in the morning. But think what all three would say. Don't let your mourning stop you from enjoying life. Kevin was always positive and up, and Steve, whom most of you didn't know, had such energy and love of music that he would wear you out. Clarence, well just look at the clips on youtube. Could anyone be more forceful and happy with his being a member of the E Street Band? I guess the lesson is to wring every drop of joy out of our brief time on earth and celebrate the gifts that these and other giving people left us, and try to do the same for others. These are the moments that make me glad I make music. It's helps me and I know it can help you, too.
It's like Steve Van Zandt wrote: Better Days Are Coming.
Love,
Southside

2010 Amsterdam and Melle
Wow! Two great crowds this past weekend, and two pretty good shows; The House of Blues just called and there are still people waiting in front of the stage for another encore! The energy in the room Friday night was electrifying. Is it wrong to use that word after the last couple of black outs? and the Keswick was great sharing a bill with two Legends: Leon Russell and Jeff Kazee. An excellent way to begin the Happy Holy Days... painting Holiday Coconuts... thanks to all those who made this trip a blast!

The Jukes want to thank everyone for making it a really enjoyable Summer. We've had some really great shows at some great venues in front of some great crowds. We've worked really hard on the Pills and Ammo project and the response has been great! The Screen Door with Anthony Kuzminski
Pills and Ammo is an album full of simplistic strengths and highlights what a great rhythm, blues, soul and rock band truly is. When you hear some of these other acts attempt to forge new ground in the rock-blues template, you hear musicians attempting to capture lightning in a bottle and it comes off as a bunch of fans trying to imitate greatness. The mix, the aural aesthetic and the performances are all top-notch making it the best Southside Johnny record since 1991’s Better Days...read more

For Immediate Release
Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes are pleased and thrilled to announce the release of their new CD, "pills and ammo" that will be played in its entirety at B.B. Kings Blues Club & Grill in New York City, June 5, 2010... the perfect venue for such an event.
While still tinged with the exuberant rhythm and blues feel that is the Jukes' trademark, and loaded with the driving sound of the legendary Jukes horn section, this new CD has a sharper, guitar-oriented, rock and roll feel to it. A harder edge for harder times.
Southside has written all the songs on "pills & ammo" in collaboration with Jukes keyboard player, Jeff Kazee, and together they explore a more personal approach than some previous records. At times angry, at times reflective, this album is a true reflection of the singer's state of mind. Titles like "Lead Me On," "Heartbreak City" and "You Can't Bury Me" contain some of the more acidic lyrics, while "Thank You" and "Place Where I Can't Be Found" show an inner-directed emotional touch.
But, as always, the sheer joy of making music is obvious throughout "pills and ammo." Tunes like "Umbrella in My Drink" with guest vocals by Gary Bonds; "Keep on Movin'" a homage to Jerry Lee Lewis and the early rockabilly sound; and "One More Night to Rock" all place the band in their classic, jubilant "let's play all night" mood. And the band has never sounded better. Aided by old accomplice Shawn Pelton and new conspirator Andy York, the Jukes rip through these 12 numbers with total abandon and fierce energy, as is their wont. They are cranked up to stomp and romp at BB King's. Come and celebrate with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes... and let the Devil take the hindmost!

Jukebox #3 Is Here!
Let's continue our stroll down Memory Lane with the Spring 1988 issue of Jukebox. Read all about the first time Bruce "borrowed" the horn section and see if you can finish the Jukes crossword puzzle. Also of note is the new bass player in Bobby Bandiera's band "Bobby Berger" [sic], and a first-hand report of Southside and Miami Steve's early shows at the Upstage.

Jukebox #2, a 40-page Summer of '87 Double Issue, is here!
How did this ever fit in anyone's mailbox? For the second stop on our way-back machine, please click here for issue #2 of Jukebox, graciously provided by author Linda T. You'll get the scoop on Bobby's plans for his first solo album, and a run-down of Jersey Shore bands whose music is now available on CD! Jukebox Issue #2 also proves that "Trash It Up" was indeed played in its entirety at least once, and that Bon Jovi really did start out as a hair metal band.

Jukebox?
Way before there was "Jukebox" the box set, there was Jukebox, the newsletter! In the late 1980s, before the Internet connected Jukes fans around the world, our own Linda T. wrote, edited and distributed Jukebox to share information and reviews about the Jukes, their various side projects, and the Jersey Shore music scene. Created as a labor of love by a dedicated super-fan, Linda recently unearthed the original issues and would like to share them with everyone in Jukes Nation. So sit back, grab your favorite libation and click here for a fun trip on the way-back machine!

Hood's European/UK Tour Recap
Thinking back on past tours, we sometimes ponder, "Did they really play Hernando's Hideaway? Twice? Was there ever a show when Fever wasn't played?" Luckily, Hood's knowledge management team has been hard at work crunching the numbers from the Jukes' 2008 UK and European Tour, and we've come up with the attached PDF showing how often each song was played.

You Know... Contest Winners
Thanks to everyone who entered our "You Know You're a Jukes Fan When" contest. After reviewing all of the entries, Southside has narrowed down the winners to five finalists and our Grand Prize winner, Joe Lovotti, who says: "You know you're a Jukes fan when in 1978, at the age of 17, you have to suspend your turntable with ropes from the ceiling just to keep the needle in the groove while you crank 'Without Love's' horn solo to 10." I think we've all been there. To see all of the winners, please click here. All of our winners will receive an autographed copy of the winners list, a t-shirt from the Jukes Apparel Collection, and a copy of Ruff Stuff 3. Our grand prize winner Joe will also receive an autographed Jukes drum head.

Christmas Eve Message From Johnny
"Friends, fans, and enemies, lend me your Master Card...I mean, ears. I am sorry for no Jive in such a long time, but I just haven't been able to do it. I have tried many times, but inspiration is lacking and it was a tough year for many of my good friends, so I've been worried and a little down. But I am feeling much more juvinated lately, so Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to all!
In lieu of a Jive, I have gotten a special CD, Ruff Stuff III, for the New Year's attendees. And, yes you no-shows will get a chance at it. Hold yer water. Eat, drink and be merry. That's an order."

Southside Johnny with the Keith Reid Project
From Keith Reid (co-founder of Procol Harum):
I'm a Southside fan from way back. So when I was getting this record
together and my songwriting partner Matt Noble said John was coming by the
studio, I said we've got to play him "A COMMON THREAD". A song which we'd
just written. Well, John not only liked the song, he offered to sing it for
us! He also sat down and wrote another song with us for the record,"NINETY-NINE DEGREES IN THE SHADE", which we're very pleased with. So now
I've gone from being a fan to having him sing two songs on my record! How
cool is that? The album is THE KEITH REID PROJECT. I just wanted to express my appreciation and share these
amazing tracks with the Southside fans.
Note to the fans:
We are attempting to obtain this release for purchase directly from the Southside Store. Stay tuned for updates.

A New Contest Direct from Johnny
Well, I said I'd have brain ticklers for ya, and finally I am getting around to posting one. A few months ago, I was reading "This Day in History" in the London Times, and ran across these three people who were born on the same day....different years, of course... and wondered what connection might be made, or what story might be concocted that would include all three. Points for originality, humour, insight, but not penmanship. Have a go, and good luck.
There will be prizes.
Sigmund Freud.....1856
Robert Peary........1856
Orson Welles.......1915
Extra points for throwing in Rudolph Valentino.....1895, but not mandatory.
Please send entries to thisdayinhistory@southsidejohnny.com

Danny Federici
So we lose another friend... I have known Danny since he started playing at the Stone Pony back in the late 60s. He was always a crusty guy with a sarcastic sense of humor, so, of course, we got along just fine. I can recall many nights jamming on blues and rock & roll classics, then he and I,Garry, and whomever else was on stage would shift into some jazz standard or improvise on a chord progression. He was a much more advanced musician than most of us at the time, and he raised the bar for all of us. It was embarrassing to hear how good he already was and to listen to your own pitiful efforts. And, yes, for all you REAL early fans out there, Danny was the one who pushed the speaker cabinets over onto the chief of police who was behind the stage trying to cut the power on a Steel Mill concert. There were arrest warrants, so he always denied it, but I was back there and saw him get up and do it. No one was hurt, but it helped keep the show going. Good on ya, Danny. Rest easy.

Breaking News
In a somewhat shocking developement, Southside Johnny is leaving the band to join a religious order, but we will try to finish out the years' shows with a revolving group of lead singers who have volunteered their services, including, (depending on availability):
Bruce
Jon Bon Jovi
Steve Van Zandt
Meatloaf
Delbert McClinton
Brittney Spears
Whomever wins the next "Idol"
Whomever shows up
All of us here in Jukesville wish Southside....um, Brother John, the best, and we hope he finds the spiritual peace he's looking for. Stay tuned for further developements
-Bill Durborow

Question of the...WHAT?!?
In an effort to fill the gap left by the Breaking News posted above, we will be expanding the scope of the Question of the Week. Effective immediately, you can submit questions for anyone associated with the band about anything. Anything? Yes ANYTHING!
Ask Joey Stann the meaning of life. Ask Jeff Kazee about his pets. Ask Bill Durburow about the weather. (Just don't send questions for Johnny until his vow of silence is over.) We will attempt to obtain answers to any and all of your questions.

*2nd runner up*
Tasha
Sunday noon in Ocean Grove
It's time to raise a glass
Too bad my bottle's empty
And my car is out of gas
No probs, no worries, all is well
My friends won't let me down
'cept my girlfriend's back in Belgium
And Jon took Bobby out of town
I'm working through my buddy list
This should be a piece of cake
But La Bamba's playing with his kids
And the Pin is on smoke break
Alas, alack and fiddle dee dee
I'm really in a bind
No wait! I know! I'll call Kazee
He'll buy and he won't mind
I dial his place but he's not in
I reach him on his cell
He says "come back to my new digs
And I swear I'll treat you well"
The train ride to New York's a bitch
I'll ask some more folks first
There must be someone closer
To help me quench my thirst
No point to call the other Jukes
It really is no use
They won't lift a finger
After years of stage abuse
How 'bout all the new guys
Ralphie, John, the Dude?
I ask them bring me some JD
Their answers are quite rude
My God I'm really desperate
This wasn't in my plans
I can't believe it's come to this
I have to ask the fans
Snafu, Lin, Maryanne, Celtic Chef and BB
They're always nagging me for songs
They'll send some booze - they owe me
SOS! Aidez moi! Chip in on a case!
They will! They do! They send it to
That Southside on MySpace
Tasha's down in Richmond
No use to me at all
Rea's across the ocean
It costs too much to call
I could try Carol - she's nearby
She won't let me go sober
But after calling her a troll
There's no love from Miss October
Miss Pif will help! I know she will!
I'll call her in the city
But she offers only wine.
It's Jack I want, have pity!
Buttercup or Pammy
Garden angel you're my girl
Whatcha mean that you won't help me?
You rather save the squirrel!
Jackie Sheehan you're the man
You serve up MP3's
And Deb from Dime a Dozen
Won't you listen to my pleas?
Could you both send cyber-aid
By e-mail, fax or cable
Make some whiskey apparate
Right here upon my table
Rose Walsh my friend you're not forgot
I just can't rhyme your name
And Big E from the Birchmere
I know you're not to blame
Restless Heart and Bluesdude
Mrs. Jukesfan, Sally, Benny
Passion Street Ed, Canadian Fan
Bring me spirits good and plenty
Where are the Druids? Glasgow John?
Stony!/Stormy where you been?
Leave some bottles at my door
Don't knock - you can't come in
Annelli and my other fans in
Sweden, Denmark, Norway
You are too far to help me now
But soon I will come your way
Maggie and all you others
What's become of you?
If you get me some Jack Daniels stat
I'll agree to Jukestock II!
I may just have to help myself
I hate to leave my deck
Too far to walk I'll have to bike
I hope that I don't wreck
So friends that's my story
I'm on the horns of a dilemma
What to do? Which way to go?
To solva my problema
It's come to this I have to choose
I'm really in a pickle
Is it further to New York
Or by by by bicycle?

Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Southside Johnny
autographed guitar auction
On
November 27th, the Jukes lost one of our beloved family members,
longtime sound man and all-around great guy, Sean Giblin to cancer
at the young age of 43.
Hood, Ed Manion and our friends at the Rock and Soul review have
donated an autographed guitar for auction with all proceeds going to
the family of Sean Giblin.
On December 12th, 2006 "The Bobby Bandiera All-Star Holiday Concert"
presented The New Jersey Rock n Soul Review at the Count Basie
Theatre in Red Bank, New Jersey. The cast of All-Star performers
included Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Gary US Bonds, Southside
Johnny, Bobby Bandiera, La Bamba, Mark Pender, Joey Stann, Mr.
Popeye, Ed Manion and Bob Burger.
After the show all of the above mentioned performed signed this
black Fender Telecaster guitar to be auctioned off to benefit the
family of the recently deceased Sean Giblin, long time monitor man
for various artists including Ani DiFranco, Southside Johnny, Blues
Traveler, and others.
Included with the guitar is the flyer for the show (VG condition)
and the 3-page set list that laid at Bruce's feet during this show.
Also comes with padded guitar case.
The guitar was graciously donated by Lisa Kodan of Garden State
Music Center, located at 1861 Hooper Ave. Toms River NJ.

JUKEBOX cometh!
Two and a half years in the making, dozens of days rooting
through dusty boxes of cassettes and reels, hundreds of hours
listening to, agonizing over, and transcribing archival analog
material into digital, uncounted cold pizzas and
headaches...all-culminating in the long-awaited (maybe), first and
only (probably), Jukes box set.
Over five hours of demos, live tracks, album drops and acoustic
stuff dating back over three decades. Much has never been heard
before (except by us). Four CDs plus a bonus CD. A 40-page book
containing thousands of words of historical material and pictures
for those of us who can't read. Something for everyone...all in
JUKEBOX. This is a "gotta have" for all Jukes fanatics!
Coming to the website store just about in time for Christmas;
definitely on sale NYE. See the fine print below for details and
disclaimers.
The fine
print: The slaves at the pressing plant are being whipped brutally
to get these sets finished and delivered, which we hear will be done
by next week; but you can place your order for this monumental work
now! We cannot promise delivery by Christmas because we tried to cut
a delivery deal with Santa, but he claimed to be too busy doing
something else around the same time. But orders will be filled by
our own gnomes as quickly as the little people can work.
That's the good fine print. The not-so-good fine print is that,
because Santa refused to cooperate, we have to ship these digital
tomes via the US Post Office. Their fees plus handling are: $7.50 to
the US; $10.50 to Canada; $18.50 to the UK; and $20.00 to all other
countries and planetary systems in our galaxy. But look at it this

Remembering Sean
It is a profoundly sad day in Juke World. One of the best people
we have ever known has passed on to that undiscovered country and
left behind a great many grieving friends. The irrepressible Sean
Giblin, sound man, blithe spirit, dreadlocked manboy, and all around
good guy died last night after a long; strong war against cancer. It
came on him so quickly, as all true villains do, and stole first his
freedom, then his life. Never got his heart, though; we have that
now, and all the memories. We'll need both to fill in the great hole
he left in our lives. Fare well, Sean. Safe home.
Raise a glass.

Misinformation in Trenton Times
newspaper
In an article that appeared in the Trenton Times recently, it
was stated that our Southside was somehow associated with a proposed
Tavern to open in Trenton in the future, called South Side Johnny's
Tavern. FYI, this could not be more wrong. There is no association,
relationship, affiliation, connection, attachment, bond, contract,
or the like, existing anywhere, at any time.

In response to seeing Southside Johnny on the Imus in the Morning
show, we received the following email. A letter from new fan, Sue
Clark:
Subject: I love you guys!
For the first time in many many many years music felt good. You guys
rock and beyond! I saw you on Imus and am planning on buying your
CD. I can't believe you are not more known! I'm telling everyone
about your music. To me it was like listening to the rebirth of
soul. But then you all have been around a long time...guessing from
your site. I had never heard of you until May 25th, 2006. So not a
rebirth actually, but a rediscovery of soul by a now die-hard fan
and I only got to hear 3 songs!!!!!..and each song blew me away. You
need to come to Arizona for a concert or better yet...one in Rocky
Point on the beach...spring break would be about right. I will be
visiting your store soon...stay cool and rock on Jukes! Ciscoblue oh
and btw Johnny u r so right about the horn section, it always makes
a band sound great! But then everything in your band sounded
beautiful!
